Amnesty Gamble

Granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants is causing many Americans to be skeptical of the whole idea.  Americans believe that it could threaten their way of life and in general its a bother. Being able to grant amnesty means giving illegals countless opportunities to better the lives of adults and that of their children. Coming to America can give some sort of hope to illegal immigrants that it can and does get better if you take advantage of the changes. Most importantly allowing immigrants to stay shows better diversity in our nation’s population and culture.
In the article “Immigrants Enriches You and Me”, by Nicholas Kristof, he mentions a few vulgar comments like “repulsive to our habits and tastes” and “immigrants are steep in ignorance”, that were made by The Christian Examiner and Harper’s Weekly (Kristof 1). These writers made it out to seem as though having illegal immigrants in our country is a disgusting idea and inappropriate. In reality, immigrants may be ignorant to American ideas and ways but the idea is that they come to America to learn about the differences. All illegal immigrants see is opportunity to better themselves and their families by finding any job that pays, learning the English language as time passes, and giving their children the option of education. Who’s to say that undocumented immigrants are the ignorant ones, when people opposed to the idea of amnesty don’t accept their differences and what they contribute to America. In terms of “repulsive to our habits and our taste”, what good habits and tastes do Americans show to anyone in this world? That its okay to exploit women and judge those that are different? If anything, immigrants bring culture to North America and better habits like being family oriented and working hard because that's all they have. In a sociology study, it showed that 75 percent of undocumented immigrants highest priority is family (Halm 3). Illegal Immigrants offer this idea that families stick together because that's what makes the individual stronger. Americans can benefit from some of these habits which are so called “repulsive to our habits”.
This idea that undocumented individuals shouldn't be granted amnesty and sent back to where they came from is outrageous. In that case, we should all start packing and going back to where we descended from because unless your Native American, we all technically are illegal. Kristof mentions, “For starters, unless you are a full-blooded American Indian, we have you” (Kristof 2) No one in this country has the right to say “immigrants” shouldn't be here unless you are in fact an American Indian. Ed Butowsky, the author of “We Cannot Afford Amnesty for Illegal Immigrants” wrote, “But if his fix, as rumored, is to grant amnesty to an estimated 5 million illegals, he’ll be making a huge mistake, because we simply can afford it. Amnesty will cost you, the American taxpayer a fortune” (Butowsky 1). He goes on to say that on average it will cost $14,000 a year for each undocumented immigrants. But according to the Stephen Goss, the chief actuary for Social Security Administration and the Center for American Progress, unauthorized immigrants have contributed $100 billion to Social Security over a decade and don’t collect benefits and paid another $11 billion in taxes in 2010 alone (Kristof 2). If these unauthorized immigrants alone received permits and entered into the system, they can add another $45 billion in over 5 years in payroll taxes. (Kristof 2) Adding up all those profits, it seems to me as though $14,000 is being covered and is even exceeding. Yes, 12 million illegal immigrants times 14,000 amounts to a terrifying number and looks as though its impossible to generate enough to cover the cost of granting amnesty, but it doesn't account for those who are not documented as illegal and still contribute to these numbers and the fact that they do not receive the luxury of benefits, 401k, and social security.
Those that are undocumented didn't ask to be born in places where there isn't much for them to grow on as a person, it was all by chance. As Americans with more than opportunities, it is our job to give them the chance for a better life and to allow undocumented immigrants to contribute to our country because it is not hurting anyone and most importantly, no American is getting deprived of their opportunity to succeed because of those who are illegal. Instead of fighting against one another, Americans must unite because it makes us a stronger country and then America can really live up to the idea that it is land of opportunity and diversity. It shows that this country judges no one and accept everyone.

  1. You have a few grammatical errors. For example instead of using the word "its" which is possessive, you should use "it's" which means "it is". Also try using "we're all" instead of "we all". Also, there where some statements where it was difficult to know if it was actual evidence or a personal opinion. Another error is that when quoting someone such as "Halm 3" try to tell the reader where you got this information. In paragraph three, you make some good points on how immigrants affect the United States Economy. You also make a good point when you state that most people in the United States except Native American are the real illegal aliens.

  2. Great ideas were presented in your essay. Awesome point on showing the views of an American citizen and of an illegal immigrant. However, your conclusion has some conflict. No American citizen signed any document stating in order to live in America, we must help others. It may seem ignorant to say this but each citizen has their own struggles to handle on a daily basis. Overall, your essay had great ideas and flow which made your stand strong.

  3. The points you stated in your argument was outstanding. Especially this one "This idea that undocumented individuals shouldn't be granted amnesty and sent back to where they came from is outrageous. In that case, we should all start packing and going back to where we descended from because unless your Native American, we all technically are illegal." *standing ovation* Yes, yes, yes! People forget that this country was founded by illegal immigrants, so why hate on the very people that started this country. Is it because some of us are not white skin? who knows. Anyways, your argument was really good. Good job.

  4. Your essay was well balance and supportive for both sides, which made it good. Another great thing you pointed out was that undocumented immigrants do not have any benefits like a 401k, and social security. Also you are correct, working hard is one of the few things immigrants can claim their own, as well as to sticking together to be more stronger as an individual. Also, you use some well evidence to support your claims that made sense and made it more difficult to disapprove.

    1. One cannot blame a person to want to better their life and the lives of their loved ones. Everybody has the right to pursue happiness, but some Americans want to prevent that from happening. Although it is not really Americans' job to better the lives of immigrants, it is more of an unwritten rule to help those in need. People should always lend a hand to those who are struggling and those who deserve it. America is blessed with the opportunities it has and we should share those blessings with others who are struggling for an opportunity. Just like this paper implies, Americans must unite to benefit the country as a whole.

  6. Stating that how are Americans to say that illegal immigrants are to blame. They might be exactly what America needs fix some of the issues. The only thing that is stopping this from happening is fear of change. Another good statement you provides was "chance." By saying that they are not the ones who decided to be born in places without having documents is not their fault. That is just how it is. Overall, we are all humans. American citizens and illegal immigrants from all over the world are all the same. It's sad that immigrants will do anything to be here whole America tries everything to keep them away. Good job I'm stated good facts.

  7. The essay consisted of good ideas that argue for a potential amnesty. You rightfully stated that most immigrants come to America to work hard and make an honest living. To search for the American which ultimately benefits our cultures and economy. Your outside sources showed the reality that many Americans are still afraid to change their old habits. Even though many immigrants pay all of their income taxes, you show how they cant collect social security or make 401 k plans. Were basically working them to death even though they've done everything a normal citizen would do. On the contrary to your solution do you think America will be able to accept everyone's population as time progresses?

  8. Your esssay was very balanced. You explained both your position and the opposing sides very logically. You had a few grammatical errors. However, the main idea of the essay was very clear and ethical. You were right on giving them potential amnesty. Yet, they can be a financial burden to our nation. Not to mention they are many more disadvantages to letting immirgants into our nation. However, your standing position on the topic was very clear and logical.

  9. Your argument was well balanced out between for amnesty and against amnesty, you provided both sides in depth and with supporting evidence. you had a great of keeping your argument organized to make it easier your your audience to better understand.

  10. It is in fact true that the united states is a nation born from immigration. There is no way in hiding it when it is taught at the elementary school level. As said previously everyone is an immigrant, yet students have been taught that when the Europeans came over to the "new world" they were welcomed and accepted. Later in life do students realize that the natives were mistreated and run out of their own land. It comes with out saying that the people of this country fear the same will happen to them. They fear being run out of this land by immigrants.

  11. This argument was clear and provided enough support and personal thinking behind the evidence. You talked about more issues other than money issues, such as immigrants wanting to make an honest living, and that everyone in the United States is an immigrant unless they're a true Native American. Your argument was passionate and professional and was difficult to counter argue.

  12. The argument was clear to understand, you discussed both sides of the issues dealing with immigration. Also you provided us with evidence to support your main points. This paper has changed the way others think.
